Background
Herons and egrets are among the tallest birds found along the coast. Some are associated almost exclusively with saltwater bays and estuaries. Others are more often found around freshwater ponds, streams, and rice fields. A few are found in both types of habitats. They are large wading birds with long-necks, long legs, and dagger-like bills. They generally feed on fishes, snakes, frogs, and crayfish.
