Turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum)
is the most common species of grass found as underwater meadows
that stabilize the estuary floor. It reduces erosion and offers
protection and living space for other estuary organisms. A network
of roots called "rhizoids" connects the blades of grass.
When the grass dies back in the winter or breaks away during storms,
the rhiziods allow for regeneration or re-growth in the next season. |
