CITGO Leads Petro-Chemical Industry In Protecting Our Marine
Environment.
The
Environmental Protection Agency recognizes the Corpus
Christi Ship Channel as one of the only industrial waterways
in the nation that meets the "fishable and swimable"
criteria.
|
The sea
water used in marine exhibits at the Texas State Aquarium
is taken directly from the Ship Channel at the Port of Corpus
Christi, one of the largest Petro-Chemical Industrial Ports
in the United States.
The Port
of Corpus Christi is the fifth largest port in the United
States, docking more than 6,000 vessels a year and moving
89 million tons of cargo.
About
78 million tons of petroleum make up almost 90% of the cargo
moved through the port.
CITGO moves more oil through the port of Corpus Christi than anyone
else -- 5.8 billion gallons on 1,500 vessel shipments in 1998.
Crude oil is imported from Venezuela, processed at the two
CITGO Refinery units along the ship channel, and exported
as Crude Oil, Fuel Oil, Gasoline, Gas Oil, Feed Stock, and
other refined products.
To minimize
impact on the environment, CITGO has invested millions of
dollars in equipment, facilities, safety procedures and training
to assure that the offloading, processing and reshipping of
these petroleum products have minimal impact on the ground,
water, and air.
How well
does CITGO protect our environment?
Last year, The United States Coast Guard and the Texas General
Land Office recognized the CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery for
completing one year of shipping operations with NO oil entering
the water.
"Your
company, specifically the Corpus Christi facility, has helped
ensure the highest state of readiness for the protection and
preservation of the marine environment of the South Texas
coastal zone."
Processing
5.8 billion gallons of oil throughout an entire year with
ZERO spillage is an exceptional achievement. Imagine filling
the 18-gallon gas tanks of 322,222,222 automobiles without
spilling a drop!
It takes
a lot to not spill a drop. And, CITGO Petroleum Corporation
is proud to recognize those Corpus Christi shipping and dock
personnel responsible for this outstanding achievement.
